For its initial months of operation, Protect Wildlife conducted assessment activities with stakeholders in Palawan, Zamboanga City, and Tawi-Tawi. These stakeholder consultations helped identify baseline data and validate information and related issues regarding the project sites. The results of its initial assessments have also been presented to project partners to facilitate the identification of potential areas for collaboration. In Palawan, the assessment results became the reference for developing an action plan for the improved management of Mt. Mantalingahan Protected Landscape.

In March 2017, Protect Wildlife held an orientation seminar on wildlife law enforcement for the LGU members of the Zamboanga City Anti-Illegal Wildlife Trafficking Task Force, people’s organizations, and community members from the Pasonanca watershed and Santa Cruz Islands (an emerging ecotourism site). A similar activity was held for the DENR Region IX enforcement division. The application of national environmental laws in the local context was explained in these seminars.

In the same month, the project conducted a series of workshops on forest land use planning for the representatives of five municipalities within the Mt. Mantalingahan Protected Landscape. Through the workshop series, the municipal technical working groups saw the need to validate land and resource uses in the protected area and developed a plan for the purpose.

The project has in its early stage already established several partnerships, including those with Conservation International-Philippines and Lutheran World Relief. It supports the activities of the inter-agency task force for tackling wildlife trafficking in Zamboanga City, and in March hosted the task force's first meeting and development planning.
